My name is Walter Pilhár, I live in Lauenburg on the River Elbe in northern Germany, about 50 km southeast of Hamburg: JO53GJ. By profession, I am a business economist and, as a retiree, I still work as a freelancer in the field of accounting. Born in 1959 and licensed since 1978, so both are no longer that new.

Started as a shortwave listener in 1971, initially receiving radio stations from all over the world, then also amateur radio with the transistor world receiver, which had two tuning knobs for SSB on the back. Homemade QSL cards were delivered by bicycle to the first stations, DK2YS, DL1OV, and got to know the fascination of amateur radio.

Finally licensed at 18, initially only C: DD7BS with a helical antenna, 2m DX from the roof, then DL3LBP, many moves, DIG nets, antenna experiments (easier in the countryside), RTTY contests on the Fuchskaute (photo), but then also a "forced pause" due to too much QRL and BCI from the neighbors.

After the radio break, there were the digital operating modes, which I tried skeptically. I was quickly convinced when I reached ZL on 40m with 40 W on a vertical. Meanwhile, I am very active in FT8, but as an 'old' amateur radio operator, I really appreciate the CW mode; I only use SSB in contests, skeds, and of course the DIG-net.
